The Referral Process

A family wishing to visit Lighthouse School® is invited to do so by arranging an appointment with Lighthouse School's Enrollment Team. A family is encouraged to receive authorization to visit Lighthouse School from the Director of Special Education of their city or town prior to a visit being scheduled. This is to ensure that all persons involved with the responsibility of educating each student are included in the process from start to finish. This provision is consonant with Lighthouse School's strong commitment to communication and consistency as important criteria of service quality.

Visits typically last about an hour and a half. During the visit a member of the Referral Team describes the many services available at Lighthouse School and shows parents, school officials, or other support persons the facility and a variety of ongoing lessons and activities to provide a more in-depth look at the Comprehensive Biodevelopmental Services Model. When the student is along for the visit he or she is generally encouraged to meet other students and hear from them about Lighthouse School. Students and families meet members of the Enrollment Team which convenes weekly to assess the needs of prospective students and determine if Lighthouse School is able to offer admission. Again, throughout the process, communication between parents, school systems and members of the Enrollment Team insures that the best decision is made for each child.
