Students and Families

Students attending Lighthouse School are 3 to 22 years of age and have very heterogenous, or diverse, disabilities and needs. Lighthouse School has intentionally enrolled students having dissimilar disabilities and needs to provide abundant opportunities for insight by comparison. It is often beneficial for students in accepting and understanding their own disabilities to compare and contrast those disabilities to what may be very different disabilities of other students. This is beneficial because coping effectively with a disability involves insight based on objectivity. Insight is an important prerequisite for achieving total life success, the cardinal goal for each student enrolled at Lighthouse School.

A major prerequisite for the success of the Comprehensive Biodevelopmental Services Model is consistency. Consistency refers to all faculty members and all family members (or residential service providers) having synonymous expectations for and interactions with each student. Families represent a very important component of the treatment team at Lighthouse School. Families are strongly encouraged to be involved and willing to give and receive information on an ongoing basis. Each student's biodevelopmental progress is highly dependent on the quality of the bridge that the family and Lighthouse School faculty can build together. See the Family Involvement methodology of APEX Bioeducation for more information.

APEX Bioeducational Activities provide an opportunity for learning and enrichment in a variety of clinical, academic and vocational areas and incorporate positive biodevelopmental outcomes which include stronger identity development, better relationships, and creative thinking.
